Sheep and silage

Good morning,

I was wondering if it was ok to feed the sheep with silage ?

because a friend of mine has dropped me a nice big round bale ... and that would basically feed them until lambing ..

what do you think ?

As far as I know, silage can be fed to any ruminant - cud chewer - so it should be fine for sheep. Nice present!

hi there, i have a flock of sheep which i have fed on silage for a few years now and it is fine . we make our own silage / haylage so we have the benefit of knowing when it was made. The only thing that you have to watch out for is to ensure that the silage has ' matured fully ' i always use the rule that if i make it in june it is fed to the animals from christmas on. however my neighbour who has farmed all his life and had several hundred head of sheep maintains that you only need to wait three months or so, obviously this is up to you, i hope some of this info is helpful . one more thing, given the moisure content of the silage just be aware that it will effect the sheeps droppings. worth keeping an eye on if there are flys around. i am no expert and this is only what i do, but maybe it will be of some help . all the best
