mother's day gift ideas?

Getting in a bit early but I thought this year I may be able to make or grow something. Any ideas for a tight budget???

Mothers day on this side of the globe is on the 26th of March so we haven't got long enough to grow anything, when is it down there? In the past I've had my offsprings paint up a couple of large terracotta pots (anything Grandsons create will be treasured) with some bulbs in. Mine used acrylic paint and gave them a coat of varnish to make it weatherproof.

PS 'Them' being the pots getting a coat of varnish, not the grandsons!

How about making a basketful of goodies for Mum? A cake,some biscuits,sweeties ect? Tied up with a bit of ribbon it would look lovely and prehaps topped off with a bunch of greenery.

Mother's day is the beginning of May so I guess I have a bit longer.

How about a tub of herbs - you could grow them from seed. Select ones that are easy to grow and that she will use. She could think of you every time she picks a piece of parsley/basil/thyme :)

It could be an indoor window ledge type or an outdoor one.

I guess you could use old food tins as pots too - maybe an andy warhol version with campbells tomato soup tin growing basil.... or jars that you have washed out and filled with earth (you might get to see the root systems too, although I'm not sure how good that is for the plants) - I imagine you would also need to drill a hole in the bottom for drainage (carefully of course)

Are you crafty? You have enough time to make some wonderful handmade soap and bathbombs (much easier and cheaper than you might think). If the idea appeals to you, I've a couple of nice recipies I don't mind sharing.
If you prefer sewing you could try a couple of patchwork pillows. (again, much easier than they look).

Thanks for all the great ideas.
Can think of a use for all the ideas for Mother's day and Birthdays. (Too many of both) I was thinking

will plant some daffodils in a nice pot for my stepmother's Bday in August (should be just starting to flower)
Made biscuits and cakes for mum for Christmas so had better rotate that idea to MIL for Mothers day, although mum did enjoy the bikkies.......
Mum has managed to kill the parsley she had in the garden so she will either think of me when she sees the empty space or is picking it. Will have to get some cuttings started.
Any soap recipes you would like to share Hepsibah would be great. the instructions for the patchwork make it sound simple...
Love the look of the felted bags, may even try one for myself first to see how it works out.
The chook card would definately get a grin from mum Andy. I didn't even think to look on the site for anything about Mother's day. oops.
