Thanks for all your kind offers, but if you re-read my original post you will find that this is an academic question.
I have no problem at all eating 4 year old sticky sauces and as my OH doesn't like toffee sauce I shall eat it all myself.

Food manufacturers are certainly ambiguous.
I just got a pack of Chicken Kievs out of our freezer.
On the back it says "Cooking Times ... Oven (Fresh) 20mins, Oven (From frozen) 35mins"
It also says "Suitable for home freezing, defrost thoroughly before cooking"

Me too. I was expecting a bit more of the -factor, regarding what goes into sausages, etc. I had to laugh at the families, each with 4 people, wanting to cut down to £95 a week shopping. We're a family of 5 and were only spending £100 a week on shopping BEFORE we cut down. Now we'd have to spend a lot more to spend £95.
