I think being frugal is sensible but being tight is being frugal at someone else's expense

He sounds similar to a rellie of mine and I haven't spoken to him for years now thank god!
He had so few friends in the end that he'd recycle xmas cards alright, he put old ones up from previous years as he got less and less of them in the end.
He was proud of his meaness but I think he'll end up a really lonely man as being that all consumed with saving money just drives folk away.

He's not frugal, he's just plain mean!
We don't do rounds here in the States either. I used to waitress in a bar in DC, and maybe someone would buy a round of shots, but that was not the rule. Depended on how drunk and young they were.

I agree with much of what's been said: frugal is being careful and making the most of what you've got. Being tight (like the man man in the article) is just mean! I was also shocked that he expected his wife to get up in the middle of the night. If he's so bothered about it, he should do it himself.
As to rounds: I don't drink, but I never noticed that my friends do anything like this (I'm 26 so fairly young). But I know when my younger sister started uni they were doing rounds. And she didn't drink at that time either but felt obilgied to join in. I was was quite angry about that, because she was only drinking orange juice and had to buy expensive drinks for the others (when she didn't have much money). All in all, a silly idea I think.

I've never really done rounds. If i'm out with one or two friends, then we'll buy for each other, but not any more than that.
I don't drink as fast, or as much as everyone else, so i've always been the odd one out.
This rule does go out the window if i meet someone new - i ALWAYS buy the first round no matter what the gentleman in question may be drinking - it asserts my independence from the beginning. It also means that i can be sure that the first drink i have has definitely not been tampered with...
