Hi everyone,

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy a good preserving thermometer for jam making and confectionary? Online or otherwise.

Thanks,
Helen

I am really looking for a manual because I dont want something with parts that could go wrong, batteries that would need replacing etc.
Thanks for the suggestion though, I saw one like that today in Debenhams, its was around £20 looked very nice, but not really what I am after.

I got a digital one from Sainsburps a while ago. It was great - until I dropped it in the hot milk, then it wouldn't work any more and I had sore hands after diving in after it without thinking.

So I bought a manual one from eBay, item no. 230315250902 (it's still there as I write, and there's one left. The same seller also has different types). The problem with the manual one I bought was that there isn't a low temperature reading, so while it's great for hot things like preserves, it's no good for OH when he wants to get that bang-on perfect temperature for the yeast when he's making wine (I told him to stick his finger in and judge, but he likes to be accurate :hugish: ).

Hee hee thanks Rosendula.
I will have a look on ebay. I already have a dairy thermometer for low temps, just looking for one for high temps.

I asked Santa for one, and he provided - its a salter one (or is it slater :? ) John Lewis sell them, as do Lakeland..... the thing I am looking for is a hanging scale - don't know what the correct word is but the kind fishermen might use, that you can hang a bag off of.

Hi, I finally got round to buying one when I laid eyes on a very inexpensive one in TKMax last year. It was definitely under a £10, but not sure exactly how much :flower:

Ebay - I've got a bog standard - looks like a real thermometer - couple of quid!

I think what you are referring to is a "steelyard" Ann. (we pronounce it stilyard, but that may be dialect)
I have 2, one small one with a vertical scale up to 5lb and a bigger one with a clock face that weighs up to 56lb ... very useful.
