My autumn garlic isnt doing very well at all! I dont know what I have done wrong?

Re: To plant now ?
Isn't this also a good time to plant shallot sets? I think I read that somewhere anyway. I'm new at this so I might be mistaken.

Re: To plant now ?
Strange, my garlic has taken ages to sprout this year too. I thought I might have failed completely but in the last couple of weeks they've all started sprouting
. I brought it specially for sowing. Never tried growing it from the shop brought ones. Does it work ok?
My broad beans however haven't been as successful from the November sowing (maybe it was too wet at the time?) so I'll be sowing some more now. I've still got some of the Aquadulce Claudia variety so I'll have to get them in soon.
I've also planted some seed onions (for pickling onions as they never get very big) but they're still inside at the moment until they've started sprouting then they'll move to the greenhouse.
Not sure if it's the right time to grow shallot sets yet, think it's maybe too early? Never grown them myself! I'm sure the place you buy them from will give you instructions for sowing.

I haven't grown shallots either but would imagine you'd plant the sets the same time as onion sets - which for me is in April. I don't start planting anything until early April anyway because before then the weather is usually too cold or wet.

Since no one was sure I consulted the great oracle Google and found this http://www.allotment.org.uk/vegetable/o ... allots.php
Apparently ...
So I guess everyone's right.

Another site said April and suggested planting a few sets at a time from late December through to April.Traditionally they are planted, like garlic, on the shortest day to harvest on the longest but in reality they can go in as late as the end of March and still produce a respectable crop.
So I guess everyone's right.

Re: To plant now ?
Is that shallot sets? (do you get shallot seeds?) I planted them last year at the same time as my onions, they were fine but I only had 5 to start so I saved all the resulting shallots for planting again this year.

It's sets. You can get shallot seeds but it's unusual apparently.

My garlic is finally coming up, although not all of them are. I dont know what I did wrong. I didnt plant all of my autumn garlic, can I use that to plant in spring or do I need to get a different variety?

Re: To plant now ?
They will be ok to plant anytime but they do need a cold snap to start the bulb growing so get them in as soon as possible for the biggest bulbs.SarahJane wrote:bluensm wrote:Strange, my garlic has taken ages to sprout this year too. Re: To plant now ?
Plant a pot of kale.
I love kale but hate washing it and winkling out all the livestock that lurk in the curly leaves...so first week of December I sowed a couple of pots in the greenhouse (unheated) with seeds and now have lovely tender kale - ideal for steaming, eating raw in salads or popping into soups. I just keep cutting it and it grows again. You could even sow a pot on your windowsill. If there is any left in March, I'll plant them out in the garden.
The varieties I used are Kale Scarlett and Dwarf Green Curled. Seeds came from the UK as I've not found them here.

Re: To plant now ?
Just noticed that my garlic is finally sprouting too!
Mrs M that's a good tip about the kale (not that I've got a greenhouse) because I find that the green variety (dwarf green curled) rots when it is very wet and I've only got one out of three that's still OK - I think because it is so densely packed at the crown all the water just sits there and it turns slimy. The tall purple ones that I have are OK as they aren't densely packed at the top like the green ones.
