Made yogurt! First time!
Despite my bread making falier, I was sucessful in producing some yogurt!
First time I ever made it, and it worked!!
I followed a recipe in the River Cottage Family Cookbook,
I put whole milk into a pan, heated it to 46 degrees, poured it into a sterile bowl, stirred in four spoonfulls of natural yogurt. Put a lid on the bowl, wrap it in a towel, put it on a radiator, and 6-8 hours later you got yogurt!!
Yey I am so pleased that something I did actually worked!

the trick now is to remember not to eat it all, so you can keep it alive!

Re: Made yogurt! First time!
Congratulations.
We love home-made yoghurt. Richard never really bothered with yoghurt at all until I started making it myself. Now he's the one who eats the most.
It took me a bit of searching, but here's a link to an old thread you might enjoy called What do you add to already-made yoghurt or something

Re: Made yogurt! First time!
Home made yoghurt is brilliant but what's even more brilliant is if you mix a little powdered garlic, chives, Parsley and a sprinkle of salt into it and put it into a muslin cloth and leave it to drip over the kitchen sink overnight you get a lovely soft cheese that tastes like Rouille (I think that's how it's spelled) and it's about a 5th of the price of the stuff in the shops... delish :D
Re: Made yogurt! First time!
Helsbells, Congrats! I love that about making yoghurt. It's such a success experience.
StripyPixieSocks, your fancy cheese/yoghurt recipe sounds great. Thanks!

mmmmm Stripeypixeysocks that sounds yummy!!
Will definately have to try that.
Growingthings, I think a safe distance from the stove would be fine, it just has to stay warm I think. I would say have a go and just experiment till you get it right.

As an add-on to stripypixiesocks's yoghurt cheese, when you've made it make a batch of foccaccia dough, spread it on the top, sprinkle with a little coarse salt, black pepper and rosemary. Bake your bread as usual - heaven! Eat warm.

I forgot - put a drizzle of olive oil over it before you bake it.

Green Aura,
That sounds sooooo lovely, but as you may have seen from my post about getting bread to rise, I am yet to master the mysterious art of bread making!!
I will certainly give it a try at some point though, it sounds delish.

Focaccia isn't as hard to make as real bread..... actually, I think I'll go and make some now.... I'll post the recipe soon...
here it is
I still haven't worked out the ideal way of making yogurt - mine always goes slimy, it is definitely yogurt but not very tasty... must try another method some day.

Mine works quite nicely UNDER the woodburner for about 8 hours

Re: Made yogurt! First time!
I've recently started to make yogurt too!
Have made two batches from the same live bought stuff - unfortunately we are off to Scotland on Thurs so my plan of making some more from my own is yet to be tested.
Husband eats yougurt everyday on his muslie at brekkers!!
I add home made Blackberry and Brambley apple jam to mine and eat it on it's own.
To make the cheese, has the live yourt been stopped i.e. cooled or do you keep it warm?
