Which greenhouse is best?

Post: # 135902Post Davy »

i was in Homebase and saw one of those little plastic four teir greenhouses for £20 and as i never had a greenhouse before know nothing about them and for all i want it for as well, i would say it would be big enough and i was just wondering are they any good or are they just a waste of money. :?

They're OK for seedlings and small things as long as you put them somewhere sunny, but out of the wind as they'll blow away easily.

If it's all you've got room for and just want to start your seeds off then it'll do the job.

Not a patch on a real greenhouse though and cold frames are generally more substantial.

What do you want to do in it? Do you plan to make and store your own compost for example? How big is your garden and is it concrete or soil / grass etc ( my next but one neighbour spent £1000's concreting her garden so she could put pots down so don't laugh as much as I did. ) Will the gardening bug bite you if you get a good show of tomatoes etc? Are you a handy andy or a DIY knacker??

I'm going to get someone to dig the founds out near my garage and lay a few courses on block and brick then I will be doing the wood / glass for a 7m x 5m x 3m high greenhouse. I have to now as my wife bought me a solar radio for xmas and said that will work in the greenhouse..."when you get it built" ... I'll bloody well show her...lol.

If you can answer these questions you might / will get a much more detailed answer.

Take care,

Alan

The 4 tier one should be ok for you but bear ( spelling??) in mind that you will inevitably have more seedlings you want to grow than space. It always happens and if you have toms in there also then these are long growing plants so they may take up a lot of room.

I've had one of those four tier plastic ones for just over a year now and it's just about had it :( . It just doesn't cope with the wind (even though it's not too windy) and the plastic has detached itself from the zip round the door in places. I'm beginning to wonder if my seedlings will grow in it this year! It did work well for a year though, grew some lovely lettuces in it until recently. Just bear in mind it might not last long...

Have a look at [url]http://www.greenhousepeople.co.uk/[url]. They'll send you a free booklet on greenhouses and they're full of good advice. And the best bit is, you don't have to buy a thing. After following their advice, my OH is building me a lovely apex greenhouse using recycled timber and a load of builder's plastic.
