Flu

Post: # 135375Post Graye »

... and then, following on from the thrush and cystitis and to (almost) put the final nail in the coffin, I developed flu! Wow, I never realised that I have never actually had it before, just assumed that a heavy cold should be classed as flu. Boy was I wrong!

I don't think I've ever felt so completely rotten, shaking like a leaf one minute and sweating buckets the next. Way beyond human consumption I just stayed in bed for four days (with very frequent trips to the loo thanks to the cystitis), didn't eat and just dranks litres of bottled water.

Today is my first of feeling nearly human. I understand flu is a virus so antibiotics aren't going to help but what's the proper way to treat it? I just took a couple of painkillers to cope with the ongoing headache but I suspect my OH was getting worried and was looking up emergency numbers at one point!

The proper way to treat it is....just what you did.

Some people find glucose drinks helpful, (or hot honey / lemon / whiskey :drunken: ) but I reckon really paracetamol, aspirin, etc are the only worthwhile drugs.

It is also terribly useful to have someone monitoring you. 'Flu can run to pnuemonia and similar (which often do require antibiotic treatment), so having someone keeping an eye on you is good.

You have my sympathy. I got 'flu for the second time in my life last year. The only other thing I've had that made me feel like that was malairia.

*hugs*

You have my sympathy. Hubby is just about recovering from his flu, and hes like the walking dead he is NEVER ill and this hit him so hard I was beginning to wonder about whether it was something more serious too..

Its the crippling headache and sinus pain that has really got him down...although that could be two under 4's that he has to share the house with lol

Poor old you! I think far too many people say they have flu when they really just have a heavy cold. Staying in bed and keeping warm and dosing with paracetamol is about all you can do. Hope you will be better for Christmas! pbf

Bah humbug I'm sick now - I 'think' it's a cold but it has developed into more like flu symptoms than a cold and I have a horrid headache too. Got a bit of a chesty cough but my nose hasn't started running or feeling 'coldy', it's really wierd. Now there are 2 out of 4 of us sick in the house so my husband and brother have got to cope with Xmas dinner as I'm not going to be capable (or want to eat anything). :(

Poor you. Given all that has befallen you recently perhaps you should look at ways of giving your immune system a boost once this is all over.

It's horrible! I'm on the mend now but have no working tastebuds (apparently that happens with a severe dose sometimes). Now I'm waiting for the cough which I've now established will probably follow... I hope anyone else who also manages to get something similar will start feeling better soon.

I made a lovely dinner last night and gave up after two mouthfuls as it tasted like cardboard. What a way to diet! So I had a dish of sorbet (which I COULD taste albeit that it tasted like citric acid) and immediately got serious chest pains which had me running around the kitchen like a lunatic for something minty. And as soon as I poured the hot water on the mint teabags it just went away. Ahhhh..... My tongue is multicoloured and feels as if it has been scrubbed and my throat matches it.
