My Soda Bread.

Post: # 133870Post patR »

Doesnt need yeast, and can be knocked up in moments, there is no temp guide as we have a wood fired kitchen range and I just have it on ... about three logs...

9oz plain flour
3-4 oz SR flour
half oz cooking marg
half teaspoon bicarb soda
1 teaspoon salt
one teaspoon sugar.
dash of milk to mix.
seseame seeds
put all ingredients in a bowl, rub in marg, then mix with knife with dash of milk till soft dough, gently form ball, flatten, brush with milk, sprinkle with sea salt and seseame seeds, slash cross on top with knife and stick in a moderately hot oven for about 15 mins or untill its cooked...

you can add a pinch of mixed herbs or a sprinkle of grated cheese,or even better caremalised oinions... mmmmmnnn but its not so good next morning as toast...

Thanks for that PatR, looks like a really useful recipe to have handy. An ideal loaf to pop in the oven alongside something else, not such a performance as my usual method, and I will be giving it a try very soon!

Do you think this would work using rice flour?

I've made this a couple of times now, and it is briliantly simple and versatile. Many thanks for sharing it with us. It's going to be a regular feature in our house from now on.

I've just discovered soda bread as well. It is so easy to make if you have the oven on. I love the idea of adding cheese and onion so I'll try that next time. Just add butter and you have a ready made sandwich!

Cheers
Zoe

Thanks for the recipe, I just made some today. Oh my god, that was so easy and really tasty too. I'm definately making my own bread in future, you could save a fortune!

Yep it works with as a sweet one too, just add a tablespoon brown sugar, a chopped apple and a few sultanas, cinamen etc... and bake a little slower and it makes a lovely tealoaf type thing. keeps a few days wrapped in a cloth too.

Anyone converted '3 logs' to a fan oven setting I can use? I'd guess reasonably hot - 180, 200?

Hmmm three logs is pretty much medium oven I guess... the apple and cinamen once takes a longer time so a slightly cooler oven...
