Fishing Floats Made From Seagull Feathers

Post: # 131786Post Portland_Jon »

What do you think of these then chaps? They are made from seagull feathers collected from the beach. I have just varnished these two, there will be many more over the winter. There are millions of feathers at the Portland end of Chesil Beach, I collected 250 in less than an hour yesterday.

Smashing idea, but more for fresh water than beach fishing?

I tend not to fish in the sea much even though I live right next to it although I do go lure fishing for bass quite a lot. I also make all my own lures.

Very professional!

I remember making them out of drinking straws years ago.

Good luck with them.

Thats a brilliant way of making floats, ive had a go, but have never got it just right, i tend to use dowl, or ash tree stick, diped in varnish, and then tiped in either orange nail varnish, or green glow in the dark nail varnish

I've just finished making a fine bodied waggler from some thin driftwood twig and a cocktail stick.I'll upload a picture when the varnish is dry. I use flourescent orange t-shirt paint that I got from the clearance bin in the local art shop and finish them with clear nail varnish.

Here's my first driftwood bodied waggler, I'm going to make these in varying sizes over the winter.

Very impressive! Reusing things that are lying around is one thing, but this is verging on art.

I hadn't thought of rocket sticks but will pick some up when I am out for a walk next as there are still quite a few lying around. I love walking the tide line and picking up little bits of driftwood that no one else bothers with. I'll try to get to the beach again this weekend for a wander to see what's there.

Cheers
