Pollination of very early broad beans?
Pollination of very early broad beans?
Hi, I have recently got a polytunnel - 12X15ft and because we are on the heaviest of clay have constructed some raised beds in it. I thought it would be fun to raise some really early broad beans and so planted them in some root trainers in Oct. They are now about six inches tall and look v.healthy. The plan was to transfer them to one of the raised beds. I was about to do that today when it suddenly occurred to me that there is no way that they will be insect pollinated in (say) Feb/March! Does that mean I won't get any beans? Do they need insect pollination or can it be done by hand? Would be interested to know if anyone has had any success with this.
Re: Pollination of very early broad beans?
Yes I have done this and the results were spectacular
I grow them at the end ... nearest the door, and find that insects will find them as long as you open the door on sunny days.
It's amazing how early bumble bees venture out in early spring and they will certainly be attracted to the scent.
On another note, I've found that Mange Tout Peas will still produce edible pods without being pollinated.
