hello from somerset
hello from somerset
we are paul and barbara living in west somerset trying our best not have too much to do with "the man".
we have recently moved to a small remote cottage on about 2 acres with own power and water.
looking to introduce renewable power source - particularly wind and hydro - and use wood and solar for heating to reduce reliance on oil. Currently have lister generator feeding battery bank and oil rayburn plus stand alone wood burner. we have installed borehole for water supply.
grown most of our veg this year and foraged - amazed we did not do this earlier; it is so fulfilling.
we are not vegetarian and have started providing our own meat which has raised our respect and reduced our consumption.
looking forward to sharing thoughts with other forum members.

Sorry Bar
I'm going to have to refer to your OH as Tom henceforth.
I'm rarely envious, but you really sound like you're getting things sorted - we too are looking to go off-grid but planning regs are still so stupid we can't.
So welcome to Ish, I'm sure you'll find loads of interesting stuff.

Re: hello from somerset
thanks for the welcome
we have taken a big step and are realising how much we can learn and fitting it all in with work and stuff. Life quality is good and everything we do means the less cash we need now and in the fuuture.
we started doing this before we moved and were surprised to see how much can be achieved. in many ways it becomes a cultural thing.
Equally important is making it as easy as possible!
what we really find enjoyable is setting things up so you do a lot different things each day.
cheers

Hello!
Like Evelyn I'm in an ex-council house, and limited as to what I can do to go off-grid, but little by little people like us are doing more and more to be as Ish as we can, and changing our lives, and the impact we have on the environment, for the better.
Do envy your location and the enormous potential of your plot etc. Very good luck with everything - I hope you will post often on the Forum and let us know how things are progressing!

We all have two gifts we should try to use as much as possible - imagination and humour.
Imagination compensates us for what we are not.
A sense of humour consoles us for what we are.
And wisdom tells us not to worry about it!

Hello from me too - funny how you start doing things differently huh?
I still get a chuckle talking to my friends in the UK who knew me before we moved.... and they have absolutely no idea what I'm going on about!
Welcome to Ish
