will return for proper answer - but that was funny!

Well, if it is, it's a bloody big one.

I think it's a beetle grub of some kind - I'll see if I can find out which one.

EDIT: Silly me - I forgot about moth caterpillars. It might be one of those. Still looking.

It's not a caterpillar, and I'm about 90% sure now that it's a species of cutworm (OK, I know a cutworm IS a caterpillar, but you know what I mean).

If that's so, you do NOT want it around your garden.

I'll try to find something more specific.

How can you tell that it is big?

I'm not entirely convinced that it is a caterpillar either, but I haven't come across anything like that before.

Just had a thought, Oldfella are you a member of Total France? Cos if you are there's a guy there called ChrisPP who is a real wildlife expert and he'll probably tell you what it is.

Have to admit I didn't read that bit when I replied. I had previously looked at the thread but didn't retain the measurements in my head!

NO to be be quite honest I looked around a few sites over the years regarding the expats living in France, and for the most part they were about expats living in France and had little to do with the French way of life, or the community they lived in, French culture etc, and I was not really interested in the fact that I could not buy Faggots or Fish and Chips, or English Beer, after all I decided to come to France because I wanted to come to France, warts and all.
