Fried Green Tomatoes

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Post: # 126366Post Graye »

Here's the recipe we discussed on the chutney thread. Really easy and takes about 5 mins.

4 to 6 large green and firm tomatoes
Salt and pepper
Cornmeal
Whole milk or buttermilk (you could just as easily use a beaten egg here)
Olive oil (she used to use bacon grease)

Wash and slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them to taste. Dip in the milk then into the meal and fry in shallow oil about 3 minutes or until golden on the bottom. Gently turn and fry the other side. Drain on paper towels. Serve as a side dish - delicious with breakfast! You need to make sure the oil is hot so that the batter goes quite crispy but the tomatoes stay firm.

The lady who used to make them for me was from Texas and had wonderful "deep south" recipes she liked to cook for me. Black-eyed peas, succotash, grits, turnip greens, corn bread...
Growing old is much better then the alternative!

Thankyou! :hello1:

And that has made all the difference.
