Hello from Suffolk

Post: # 119362Post kateG »

Just wanted to say hello and what a fabulous website! Have already found my answers to my red mite problem and what to do with potatoes. I'm not very self-sufficient yet - moved last year to a house in the country with ready-made vegetable patch so was very keen to get going on growing my own. All my good intentions have gone by the wayside when my first two batches of seeds fried in the greenhouse (will learn from that mistake!) and various things didn't grow. Still, I seem to be doing a very good line in weeds - cow parsley and thistles anyone?

Still, have got 4 ex-bat hens who are doing really well, lots of tomatoes, one cucumber (!), 4 cobs of sweetcorn (though not sure when they are ready) and a couple of pumpkins on the way. No strawberries but at least plants not dead, and the raspberries did well before the chickens got them!

Hoping to do a bit better in the future but at least it's a start - I wish I'd found this site sooner!

Best wishes to everyone

Hi Kate

Welcome to Ish. Whereabouts in Suffolk are you? I was born in Ipswich and lived there for first 12 years of my life. Much of my family are still there and I WWOOF at a farm near Hadleigh from time to time.

According to my gardening book you wait until the silks have turned chocolate brown then pull back a bit of the sheath and squeeze a grain or two. If a watery liquid squirts out, it's not ready. If the liquid is creamy it's perfect. If its thick and doughy it's too late. It's my first year harvesting sweetcorn, so I've been following these instructions.

Best wishes
Rosey xx
