purple potatoes?

Post: # 123848Post Graye »

My neighbour has given me some potatoes to try. They are long and knobbly, a little like black jerusalem artichokes I suppose. Initially they looked black but now I've peeled them they are deep purple. She tells me they are tasty but a little dry and that the cooking water will go a bright turquoise but the flesh will stay purple. Assuming they are good I might try to grow some - does anyone have an idea of the variety please?

We have potatoes like that over here in NZ, they're an old Maori variety called Tutaekuri (which delightfully translates as dog poo..which I suppose is what they look like!), also known as Urenika. They're so beautiful when they're cooked, a bit more dirty tasting than a regular spud, but I quite like them. From your description your purple spuds sound pretty similar to these?? Have a look at this http://www.organik.co.nz/maori_spuds.html and see if they look the same :smurf:

There are several varieties here with very dark flesh; but I think they'll probably be different ones in France.

Pink fir apple are only pink on the outside, the insides are white. (At least mine are!) I think there's a variety called the 'salad blue' but I could be mistaken...
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

Well, they were delicious anyway and it turns out they are called Vitelotte. I eventually found this link to tell me what they were. I must admit they look a little strange on your plate...

I bought some like this a few years ago for a supermarket (I've boycotted them now though!) They said on the packet they were Shetland Black potatoes- sound just the same as yours, looked black but actually deep purple on close inspection. When you cut them there was a vein of colour below the skin.
