What do you save...

Post: # 123627Post StripyPixieSocks »

Not sure where to put this exactly so please move it if it's in the wrong place

What do you save (or recycle) that other people think you're crazy for doing?

I was just picking the wick holders out of the bottom of my used tea lights so I can re-use them for holding my wick in place when I start to make candles and dear half was giving me that 'what on earth are you doing you insane woman?' look while I was doing it!

LOL!
I save all the little scraps of soap 'cos I have one of those molds that you can make a new bar out of when it's full, and I save ALL the corks from my bottles of wine in the hope that one day I'll have enough to make my own cork notice board (I am getting there).

I save all the insides of loo rolls for germinating root veg but what really gets me the strange looks is when i go round to friends houses and come out of the bathroom clutching loads of those cardboard tubes asking if i can keep them!

LOL I save ours too but then I make home made Christmas Crackers out of them for gifts at Christmas (obviously lol). Yes even in the middle of summer I think about Christmas stuff (or crafts in general really).

I only make small crackers these days, I made a 6' long and about 1' diameter one for my Nieces 2nd birthday and she has never forgotten it nor the Mr Blobby cake I made for her too... she's 15 now  It was filled with lots and lots of little gifts, sweeties and lots of punched paper confetti which pleased my sister no end

I also save the glass jars from candles and use them for loads of things even drinking glasses after a good wash and sterilise to get the smell out.

Oh I'm totally insane. I've done the wick holder thing in the past (don't use candles much now, and have a cupboard full of them). I also do the loo roll thing - first on our allotments to harvest carrots as a result  . I also leave egg shells to dry on my window sill before crushing them to put on the allotment. If you dry them first, you don't get in a sticky mess, so there they are, lined up in the window for all the neighbours to wonder about.

I think the craziest thing I save (and I don't know if it works yet) is the limescale from my kettle. Every other day I rinse the kettle out, pouring the water through a tea strainer to catch the lime scale which, once dry, I put in a little tub and crush up into a powder. This is also for the allotment. If someone knows this is a futile effort, please tell me so I can stop wasting my time.

Another thing I'm sure the neighbours would benefit from being explained is my new habit of pouring the dirty water with potato peelings through a sieve into a large, black plastic cauldron (I use the cauldron because the sieve fits on the top of it perfectly). Once drained, the water is donated to the apple tree, and the peelings are left to dry a bit before being added to my compost bin.

I do the loo roll thing too. The cleaner at my last office used to save them all for me.

I save all margarine tubs in the hope that I might use them.

I also save the cartridges from the water filter jugs (or I used to when I had one). Now I ask my mum and the OH to save theirs but they keep "forgetting". I'm sure they think I'm mad. If you open one up it's full of tiny beads of charcoal. Most will be covered with limescale so you get this pretty black and white sand which is great for candles, putting round the top of pot plants and so on.

Cheers
Zoe

Sorry folks but I think I may have out-crazied the lot of ya.

I have a tumble dryer - I don't use it very often but need it to dry the towels for my aromatherapy business if necessary. Anyway, I save the fluff out of it, shred it and bleach it with the pulp when I make my handmade paper. It strengthens it beautifully.

This site, or the people on it never fails to amuse, encourage and enlighten me. For over 30 years of having a tumble dryer I have failed to see a use for this stuff except putting it in a tree branch near a bird box for bedding.... now i can make paper......thank you GA

Plastic bottles, tertra packs, the lids for milk bottles, all jars, bottles, tins, cans, old duff CDs, ribbons from posh sweet boxes, corks, string, marg tubs, yoghurt tubs, other plastic tubs, cosmetic packaging, dead pens, chocolate box plastic trays...

In fact, I think that we should take a trip to the recycling place... I use very little of the above, but I know it is too good to throw ought. I always have plans as to the future uses but I do have a large area of garden with nothing but rubbish in it. I did manage to Freecycle 5 bags of random jars the other day, so maybe sometimes it isn't so bad keeping hold of these things.

Other people's plastic shopping bags for bringing produce back from the allotment. Wash them again and again till they fall apart.

I rinse out, dry and then crush my egg shells to put around the raised bed dedicated to lettuce - it doesn't stop all slugs but is damage limitation. I like the idea that my chucks not only provide food but their droppings accelerate my compost and the shells prevent slugs - what clever girls!

I also save small jars for jam making (christmas presents).

I thought of doing that - but how the heck do you get the wicks in there in the first place?
