Re: Aloes again
I don't want any aloes... I've got some already but I just wanted to say that they are brilliant. I've been suffering with dry and itchy skin on the front of my shin for about 6 weeks now... it kept flaring up. Yesterday it reached a new high in terms on itchiness and I remembered my aloe plant... instant relief, followed by about 30 mins of burning pain... followed by relief again... repeated this afternoon and no itch/soreness at all.
I'll always have one of these on my window ledge from now on.

Re: Aloes again
I'd love to grow Aloes, the one I ahve looks exteamely poorly and might not last the week, or even the day!
I have a few seeds like turnip greens, and lots of corriander seeds, can do parsnip seeds soon. Or I did make some shampoo soap- not 'pretty' but makes your hair lovel and soft!
Alternatively there is an annoying cactus in the office I would gladly send you!

How do aloes have babies?! Mine is massive, but there's no sign of little ones anywhere.

Re: Aloes again
In the soil, just by the base of the aloe, maybe a cm away, wee tiny ones pop up... mine had 2 when it arrived, then it had another one. I haven't watered them in ages, must see how they are doing.the.fee.fairy wrote:How do aloes have babies?! Mine is massive, but there's no sign of little ones anywhere.
My fern is currently having lots of babies too (the same sort of way, only the babies break off of the main stem of the fern)

Re: Aloes again
Aloes! Getcher aloes!
Mine are the prolific type.
In 3 years I went from 2 to 26. If they continue to multiply at this rate I will have the following amounts in the following years:
2005: 2
2008: 26
2011: 338
2014: 4,394
2017: 57,122
2020: 742,586
2023: 9,653,618
2026: 125,497,034
2029: 1,631,461,442
2032: 21,208,998,746
2035: 275,716,983,698
2038: 3,584,320,788,074
2041: 46,596,170,244,962
2044: 605,750,213,184,506
2047: 7,874,752,771,398,580
2050: 102,371,786,028,182,000
2053: 1,330,833,218,366,360,000
So anyway come and get them. You'll have to travel to Donegal.
In return for a little weeding I'll provide a garden-fresh vegetarian feast and a bed for the night.
And if you suffer any stings or burns during your visit, we'll apply a little of nature's best.

Re: Aloes again
it could be a different breed. my mum in law's got two kinds, 30 which came from the same parent plant as mine and one from a garden centre. can't really tell any difference except one is acting like a weed and the other is happy being on its own.the.fee.fairy wrote:How do aloes have babies?! Re: Aloes again
In the supermarket, you can buy these rather delightful pots of aloe and grape yoghurt. The aloe is soft and sweet, and 'puri-puri' as we say in Japanese. I thought I might grow some to eat.
So one evening in my stroll around the neighbourhood, I found an aloe and broke off a bit. The inside looked all moist and puri-puri like the chunks in the yoghurt, so I put my tongue out and gingerly dabbed the aloe against it to see how it tasted.
AAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!! Urghgggh. Urrgggggh. Pu-pu-pu-pu--pu peh! Urrgggggh Jesus Christ!
I expected to die presently, as something so vividly toxic tasting must surely kill in very small doses. I survived, but my tongue tingled and tasted absolutely vile for a good hour afterwards.
So what do they do to it to make it mild enough to go in yoghurt?

Re: Aloes again
Well you've raised doubt in my mind simply by asking ... there probably are succulents that look similar.
Does anybody happen to know then what raw aloe tastes like, just in case what I tried wasn't aloe?
