I have heard the anecdotes Nick, and talked to people who have, but I have never done it myself.

for anyone who is interested have just pick my first 'bagged' tomatoes. used the home brand recycled brown paper lunch bags, placed over tomatoes, twisted the top of the bag to close the top and tore off the lowest corner to let the water out and a bit of air in. used twist wires on some bags - they stay on well but a bit more labour intensive. wait until the bags are wet (after watering) to check for ripe tomatoes.
out of the ten or so tomatoes that were picked this morning there were no visible signs of fruit fly, no damage from grubs and no sunburn. only one had some beetles in the bag. the bagscan be reused (limited) or composted.
