I have just spent most of the day up to my elbows in water and slugde, but we now have over 2 kilos of water chestnuts and "Arrow" a water chestnut like plant with arrow shaped leaves!
I got the ahhh, "nuts" (corms I think) from a mail order seed place. Then put in a bath as a pond and puched some holes in plastic pots. I filled the pots with potting mix, put some pebbles on the top and then sunk them in the pond. Add a couple of gold fish to control the mosquito larvae and provide fertilizer and away you go!
So there'll be lots of home made chinese food in your house then! lol
I'm quite envious - I love water chestnuts!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Thanks for the details Nev.
I don't think I shall be growing any though, I just Googled water chestnut corms and it seems that they are pretty much only available in Oz. Certainly no sign of any European suppliers.
Shame ... it seemed like a good idea.
Don't think tinned ones would grow very well
