what can still be sown this year?

Post: # 115439Post barefootlinzi »

my garden is gradually being made over into a greener garden, and that includes removing a huge shed and having a veg patch thereinstead. the veg patch will only be 8' x 12'. i am hoping to put in some raised beds as soon as its gone (my grandad has brought if from me but he is not ready for it in his garden yet) so what can still be sown this year?

I'm getting the itch to put something else in as well - looking forward to your suggestions.

Still time for radishes and lettuce - and (luckily, because I've forgotten it twice already) there's still a whole month of Pak Choi sowing time to go.

cos the weather has been so bad, you can still put in the likes of carrots, spring cabbage etc. Salad stuff obviously. Pak choi in August. Potatoes can really go in any time TBH - you probably can't buy them but just use ones that have sprouted from your potato bin. Pootle on down to your local market too - my local market still has stalls selling seedlings for all sorts of things - leeks, cabbages, broccolli, calabrese, courgettes - so you can get a head start.

Purple sprouting broccoli if you are lucky but do it now!

Spring cabbage - I seem to prefer Mastergreen, I think it is by Unwins......

Swiss Chard should get up to speed for you, and therefore keep producing through Autumn into deep Winter. I don't know about spinach, but I suspect it may be okay too..?

Florence Fennel should be okay now too in Berks (if you're growing for bulb rather than seed.)

Just about time for lamb's lettuce - fresh salad greens in winter!

Rocket, turnip greens, mizuna, spinach, carrots, beetroot, chinese cabbage, winter radish, pak choi, tah tsai, Ox heart cabbage. That's what I'm sowing now.

Next month I'll be sowing next year's onions. Later in the year I'll be sowing overwintering broad beans.

You can just about get away with Beetroot at this time of year.
I'll be trying some Pak Choi too - thanks for the reminder to plant!
