Growing Veg in containers

Post: # 115307Post wintersundog »

Hello There!

I would like some advice on which vegetables grow best in containers , and how best to look after them etc .
I have been scrounging quite an array over the last year (all shapes and sizes) , and am planning to get started next year .

Any replies much appreciated .

Thanx in advance

WSD

You can grow just about anything in a container!

I have Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Sweet Peppers and Aubergines in pots of 8" diameter x 8" depth of soil, training upwards with good supports in my conservatory. I also have tomatoes outside along with Pumpkins that I training vertically in the same way as my Cucumbers.

Everything else is in 1' squares at around 6" depth of soil so I guess if you have containers around the same size you can do the same. Oherwise if your containers are smaller or bigger just change the quantities of plants to suit.

Each square foot is holding different crops in the following quantities:
16 x Carrots
16 x Parsnips
16 x Beetroot
1 x Broccoli
1 x Cauliflower
9 x Spinach
4 x Turnip
32 x Radish
4 x Lettuce
9 x Salad Leaves
9 x Leeks
36 x Spring Onion (I originally put in 64 but think that might be just a tiny bit crowded)
9 x Red Onion
2 x Florence Fennel (I've put in 4 and seem to be okay but guidelines suggest only 2 per square foot - up to you!)
4 x Garlic
ah, and not forgetting the 4 x sweet peas - just to be different!
I've also got 3 x strawberry plants in each of 2 hanging baskets.
Mustn't forget the experimental indoor lettuce x 1 that's on the windowsill in a tiny 4" diameter by 3" depth plastic food container.

Now of course, that's just what I'm growing - you can grow potatoes in a container or use the tyre method in the Ish Bible and I'm sure someone will be along to tell you about other things that they're growing.

Basically - try anything - it'll all grow given the right conditions!

Hope that helps.

I tried growing hestia runner beans ( a self supporting dwarf) in apple boxes this year. Not impressed as they don't have many beans on although that's prolly my fault for interplanting them with nasturtiums!

Just as well I've still got my traditional runners to rely on! Just lurve runner beans!
