We love hearing from you, so here is your chance. Introduce yourself and tell us what makes you selfsufficient 'ish'. Go on don't be shy, we welcome one and all. You can also tell us how you heard about us if you like.

As it's a wet day ....

Post: # 111432Post Odsox »

As it's a thoroughly wet day and I have already made about 15 posts, I thought I ought to get around to introducing myself.
So, hello all.

I was born many years ago on a very rural Kentish smallholding, so I was living the 'Good Life' long before the BBC invented the name, and have been more or less living it ever since.
Being totally fed up with Kent either becoming a suburb of London or a marshalling yard for the channel tunnel, we decided to retire to the extreme south west of Ireland and start a new life.
14 years on, we are still here with absolutely no regrets.
Our daughter and her husband moved here as well soon after and I now have to contend with 3 grandchildren, which is nice.

We are as totally self sufficient as possible in vegetables and fruit, the only exception being oranges and bananas.
We also keep 3 hens that keep us well and truly supplied with eggs.

Although I have been gardening for more than 50 years I certainly have no claim to 'know it all', in fact every year something new and entirely unexpected crops up to keep me on my toes. Also I like to try something new every year, and experiment with new ideas (not all go to plan either !). This year I am growing Oca and Quinoa for the first time, going all South American and experimenting with growing tomatoes hydroponically.
To keep on growing in this fairly windswept corner, I have 2 greenhouses ... a small 6' x 4' aluminium one and a 12' x 24' home built one, and also a 12' x 30' polytunnel. Plus I am just finishing a 12' x 12' conservatory on the end of our bungalow which I'm sure will end up full of edible plants rather than flowering ones.

Oh, I'm also a radio amateur (ham), so that's another thing I do on wet days.

Hello odsox! Sounds idylic but I bet it's a lot of work. I'm struggling to keep up with my plot and it's a lot smaller than yours!
