Giving veg away.

Post: # 111838Post MINESAPINT »

I occasionally have a surplus, at the moment it is spring cabbage & lettuce. All my veg is grown as far as is possible in the modern world without coming into contact with chemicals. Perhaps except what is included in compost I buy and what blows over the fence from my neighbour! Although it is not as picture perfect as the chemically enhanced versions in the shops it is not far off. When we got new neighbours I had plenty of spuds and took them a bucket full of gorgeous freshly picked Pentlad Dells. A couple of weeks later I asked their children if they had enjoyed the potatoes? The reply was "oh mummy threw them away because they were dirty".

I guess I will feed my lettuce & cabbage to the goats.

Is there an emoticon for gob smacked? What a silly moo your neighbour is!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Frightening, isn't it? And it's sad that some people don't seem to realise that a lot of food is grown in (Shhhhh!! - soil).

Firstly - check with whoever you give veg to that it will be used - my neighbour and I often swap veg but there are things (like sprouts) I refuse to take and there are things (like rhubarb - unless his dad is over) that he refuses to take.

Secondly - kids do say some weird things, I wonder if Mummy had thrown out 1 or 2 that were bad? don't take the kids word for it... go to the Mum

The majority of kids in this country don't know where food comes from, most of them wouldn't recognise a potato. The majority of people in this country turn there noses up and home grown veg... keep it for yourself next time Minesapint MKG make potato wine

I remember reading of someone who wouldn't accept home produced free range eggs because they came from a chicken's bum yet she'd buy the ones from the shops!!

I think I'd be in exactly the same situation here MINESAPINT, my neighbours seem to think vegetables only consist of potatoes, in a deep fried or breadcrumbed form, straight from the bag in the freezer. Or the chippie. Or based on what is left laying outside one neighbour's house, the Old Crapdonalds :(

I intend to make lots of curries with any gluts of veg

I have seen a woman complain in a supermarket that carrots had soil on them and put them down.

It is a shame when gifts arent used the way you would like, but at least I hope she appreciated the gesture.

Oh, that's a shame. (But like Annpan says, it might not be the full story). It was a lovely way to welcome your neighbours though, and from now on you can just give them to people who will d*mn well appreciate them...
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?
