Bell peppers

Post: # 111991Post Silver Ether »

I have looked on the book shelves but can find anything already there so if this has been covered just tut and point me to the right place please ...

I have four pepper plants indoors two on the kitchen window and two in the conservatory ... all have peppers on them and they are quite small plants 10/12 inches high. How big can I expect the peppers to get as they are such dainty looking plants. I have grown pepper before but it was so long ago I can't remember.

It all depends on the variety, but most Bell Pepper plants don't grow very tall, 18 ins to 2 feet is about average.
They have a very weak root system so they only need a smallish pot if you are growing them indoors, an 8" pot is plenty.
Feed once a weak with a tomato fertiliser and that's about it, apart from enjoying fresh peppers instead of the withery supermarket ones.

I did them last year and because the plants were small I thought so were the peppers, mine were about 4 inches across. Tasty though. I dont know how you grow big ones, lots of manure and in the ground in a poly tunnel would probably give them the best shot.

The secret of growing peppers is to start as early as you can, they are very slow growing especially in the first stages.
Sown in February on a warm windowsill would be fine and a 2 foot high plant would produce full sized peppers if fed with tomato fertiliser.
Also growing in an 8 inch pot helps as it keeps the roots warm, but keep well watered in this situation.
