The GREAT STORM June 2008

Post: # 111060Post MINESAPINT »

Quite a few branches off trees around here so I hardly dare go down the garden to inspect my veggies. However had a peep and things are not as bad as expected. I planted some courgettes out a few days ago but had the forethought to cover them up with large bins last night so no problems there. My winter onions have been pretty well flattened, broad beans seem to be coping, potato tops are taking a battering and runner beans I planted out a few days ago are looking pretty sad.

2 greenhouses and no broken glass. However the wind is forecast to blow gale to severe gale all night.

I know what you mean. I won't go in my greenhouse in this sort of wind because I've heard horror stories about the glass blowing in. (Usually with my greenhouse it's things blowing about in the garden and smashing through the glass). A tree blew down and blocked the road just yards from my house this afternoon. When I phoned the council to report it they said about 30 trees had blown down around the city. So I daren't even go to my allotment, because it's a tree-lined walk there. To add to my frustrations, I had some cauliflowers and broccoli which I had hardened off and were ready to go to the allotment for planting out. I've now put them back in the greenhouse to prevent them blowing away. Fingers crossed it will die out during the night.
