More Margo's...

Post: # 109109Post SharonLee »

Hiya!

I'm Sharon, just moved out from the "Big Smoke"/ London 'burbs to the country, and been well and truly bitten by the green bug. Found this site and totally love it! Some really amazing ideas going around. I'm a bit of a first timer when it comes to gardening, especially organically, (apart from helping my dad out on the couple of occassions he's tried to get a vegetable plot up and running...) but seem to be managing to keep alive a few potato plants, a couple of butternut squash plants, 2 under acheiving tomato plants, a chilli plant and getting a herb garden together- although sadly they're all still living in pots until we can get the army of slugs down to a slightly less terrifying level.

I'm also trying to get the knack of preserving edible flowers, and have only succeeded in making a gungey sugary mess to date, so any suggestions greatly appreciated! Begun to compost, which is going nicely as the garden is huge and was madly over grown- hence the attack of the slithering mucous-y demons- read the 51 ways to desptach slugs list- some good'uns on there! I'm currently experimenting with a mix of salt pepper ginger and chilli powder... seems to be working... but as it keeps getting washed away from around the plant pots I'm going to try mixing it with vaseline and putting a nice line of it around the pots... fingers crossed! I'm also getting into recycling fabrics, the latest "project" being converting some of my old jumpers into hot water bottle covers, and am going to try "felting" when the next ones need to be retired. Loved the article on growing your own cotton- would love to know if that could be done in England!

Anyway, hope I'm worthy of being considered self sufficient-ish!- although possibly more on the "ish" side at the minute! But I'm working on it!

All the best,

Sharon
