Butter beans

Post: # 109603Post Juddy in the Charente »

Having lived in Cyprus and much admired the giant butter beans served as part of the usual meze, I have searched everywhere to try and locate a source of seeds for butter beans. No joy! Perhaps i'm just a complete tool! (as described in North Norfolk!) Any one out there know of a supplier?
Surely it is better to have grown it and eaten it than never to have grown it all?

Wouldn't you be able to just chit and plant dried ones? I know we did it with carlins and it worked very well

Oops - sorry - not sure where you are but you may be able to get them from a health store - you know the kind where you can buy dried beans and such.

I found this

Phaseolus lunatus (lima bean) is also known as the sieva bean, the butter bean, the Madagascar or Burma bean. It can be grown for the dry, ripe harvest, but it can also be eaten as an immature green, shelled bean. The young pods and leaves can be used as a green vegetable, but this of course denies the picker a full harvest. Cut green, the beans are canned and frozen in the USA.

at seeds of trade

Accoding to the Vegan Organic Network quote " Likewise, the butter bean sold dried and canned is a form of Lima Bean which will not grow in the UK: white seeded runners do give similar big beans, especially Czar from Suffolk Herbs, the taste is not the same as the true butter bean, however".

I had a look at Suffolk herbs but they are only listing red kidney beans ( for chilli )

They don't have butter beans in France, sadly. I love them.
