5 a day ... forever

Post: # 108688Post Andy Hamilton »

During dinner today my mind wandered a little and I started to think about a sort of desert island food scenario.

What if you could only eat 5 foods for ever more, what would they be?? Obviously you have to suspend the disbelief of nutrition for a moment.

I thought

Pig (cheating really)
potato
Maize (can make beer)
Cheese
and still working out the 5th tomato is winning at the moment but not sure.

Its much harder that you think, I mean imagine eating these foods and nothing but day in and day out.

Are flavourings food? eg. garlic or basil or other herbs, pepper, salt etc. Also yeast and oil's / fats. Like on desert island Discs can one assume that these are included, like the Complete Works of Shakespear and the Bible.

If so:

Nuts (so much to choose from, pesto)
Cheese (an infinate variety)
Wheat (bread, pasta, spirits)
Tomatoes (Raw or cooked, grilled or sauses)
Grape (keep you regular, make wine)

If not:

Tomatoes (Basque)
Garlic (green)
Wheat
Olive Oil (extra virgin 1st cold pressing)
Grapes

Oh I think its fair to assume that the spices, yeast and flavourings are included on the Island. I'd take the complete works of Graham Greene too.

If an animal is a food in itself, it's easy... unless you're a vegetarian!
I guess conversely it gets easier if you're a vegan.

vegan version:

Fungus
legumes
grapes
solanaceae
grain

presumably the island will have palm trees growing, so palm wine will be available as it is a drink, rather than a food.

Surprisingly enough as a vegan (oh ok a "lactose-intolerent vegetarian who won't eat eggs unless she has personally met the hens...") its harder than you might think!

Red wine is a must but obviously if I had grapes then potentially I could make my own although there are extras required like yeast & sugar ...

Soya beans to make milk, tofu, cheese etc

Chick peas to make houmous (but also need garlic, sesame seeds, lemon juice)

Tea (I'd not last long without my caffeine :()

Tomatoes to make sauce etc

Hmm, no carbs in there. Oh well, I should try this diet to shed my extra weight!
