Disappearing seeds

Post: # 106100Post tim&fatima »

We have only had our first allotment a few weeks but we managed to clear enough space for a few runner beans.
As this was our first time growing beans I thought we would try different methods.
So I put my canes up, and planted the one side with seeds straight into the bed, and then planted some in small tubs in the greenhouse.
Three weeks on, the ones in the greenhouse are thriving, and the ones on the allotment were nowhere to be seen.
I decided to investigate, and dug up one of the seeds to see what was happening.. and nothing.. there was nothing there.
In the end I checked around 10, and not one was there! as I was "investigating" a little old bloke walked past and said. you looking for your beans, I replied "yes they have gone" to which he repied "mine did that last year" and just carried on walking. :?

Whats that all about?
It's nice to be important,
But it's more important to be nice.

Mice and voles,
pigeons and moles,
eat your seeds
and leave no holes.

Lyrical, but infuriating.

I had a row of potatoe plants, all doing very well, and getting nice and bushy, the one day the end one was just gone!
No apprent reason, no evidence, it was just gone!
Also my little apple tree in my garden, only had 5 flowers, which were just starting to swell, the one day all the little apples were just gone!
I was so cross!

Yep, mice! They love 'em.

Grow them in pots, out of harms way, and then plant them out.

All my peas disappeared, too. So now it's all in loo rolls... And then, once planted, covered to prevent rabbits and pigeons from eating them.

Ahhhh so thats the answer - I was looking for holes but saw none. So i planted more in a large pot and covered it over with some fine galvanised mesh - I now have a nice dozen or so plants - too tall for the mesh now (in three days!!!) so I've covered them with half lemonade bottles while they establish a bit (and to keep slugs off too)
