Well a BIG hi to all from the new Kid on the block ....

I have the late, great John Seymour to thank for initially spark off my interest in Self-Sufficiency, with his excellent books. It's amazing how the wheel of life has spun around to the point where sustainable living, like vegetarianism and allotments, is suddenly in vogue. Needs must I guess, powered up by the dawning realisation that our very survival lies in our own hands. This shouldn't be viewed as daunting though, but an exciting adventure of discovering and learning where individuals, families and communities can pull back together in common purpose.

Between Mother Nature and emerging new technologies, the solutions are all there for us. Each morning I check out the latest innovations at http://www.keelynet.com a free site presenting news snippets from around the Globe. The developments in alternative energy and fuel sources alone, make it an uplifting read.

For a crust I market Canadian properties to Brits, in particular Nova Scotia - the bit nearest the UK. We (Brits) can own property there exactly the same as Canadians, and also visit for upto six months at a time without need of a visa, which opens up huge possiblities for joint ventures between self-sufficiency practioners, especially given the very low overheads and freedom to be enjoyed. I've a 250 acre Woodland there with a river and the council taxes? 50p a week ...

Having lived in the Province, in the countryside, with my Family for four years and experienced drought, power-outs, deep snows, log-burners and bad, bad septic systems .... self-reliance has become prevalent. A dry well for nine weeks gives one a true appreciation of the value of water.

At the moment I'm working on the design of a self-sustaining 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom Lodge that standings on pads, free of foundations with the ability to process it's own grey water and sewage, as well as collect and store rainwater, plus use an array of alt. tech for light, heat and cooking. The idea is that these can be parked anywhere with minimum environmental impact, without need of planning consent, and cheap to function.

Any fellow member interested in Canada, give me a shout - I promise not to try and flog you anything!

"Tank ee", as we do say down here in sunny Cornwall.

The woodland is up for sale, and has the thumbs up from the local planning for an application for an Eco Village and Adventure Biking Centre (the new TransCanada Trail - 10,500 miles long, sweeps past the land). With the trees, river, two small lakes, brooks, little waterfalls, valleys and hills, plus trails and wildlife, it's a unique offering.

So with a Â£1 from your cash reserves, nip down and buy a Lottery Ticket for tonight and I'll expect a phone call around 11pm!

So you are settled in France - what a nice lifestyle for the idle rich! I see you're into winemaking - if you have your own Vines - a tip I picked up from a friend with a Vineyard in Nova Scotia, Canada - he had a vine nursery and would stick them in the ground until they started growing roots, then removed, reversed and replanted them. The roots then went on to be branches, giving the plant a fast, healthy start.

A beautiful operation in a stunning location. The Winery produce was something else - could be used as embalming fluid for the living or degunking engines.

Your Photo Porfolio is absolutely incredible - well done.

You are right that digital makes this possible - who would have thought ten years ago, the facilities and communications facilities we now have at our fingertips ... phenomenal. There's never been more social photography, I just hope that the material is archived for future generations .... As mentioned in another reply, I'm into genealogy and would just love to have seen what my ancestors looked like, where they lived and worked, what they wore ... other than in Police Records!
