Aubergines and tomatoes - why can't I grow them together

Post: # 106472Post Lady Willow »

Hi folks

I was reading in one of Bob Flowerew's books that aubergines and tomatoes shouldn't be grown closely together.

Does anybody know why? (Don't you hate it when books tell you to do or not to do things without telling you why?!)

And what does "closely" mean? Can I put aubergines and tomatoes in the same polytunnel? Does anybody grow them in a polytunnel together without issue?

GORGEOUS weather here today... had sunscreen on at 9am this morning and it was baking hot.

Now, the most important question of the day ..... Bloody Mary's ... just how early is too early???

Cheers folks

i have both plants in my gh this year too...

I grow them in the same patch and they seem to do okay. Wish they'd get a move on though. They're both a bit slow out of the blocks this year.

Bloody Marys are a fantastic hangover cure. I used to have one at 6am every Monday on the plane when I commuted from London to Dublin. Without a hangover to excuse you, I'd suggest that 10am is an acceptable hour. I wouldn't dream of drinking one after noon.

I'm only going off memory here (my Bob Flowerdews are all the way in the living room!), but I think what he means is not to follow one with the other in rotation as they're part of the same family. The only real reason I can think of not to grow them together is because they could suffer from the same diseases or pests. Which would be a shame since they enjoy similar growing conditions.

Now I´m imagining Contadino as some kind of Bertie Wooster figure....

"I had no heart for breakfast, I told Jeeves to drink it himself" :drunken:
baby-loving, earth-digging, bread-baking, jam-making, off-grid, off-road 21st century domestic goddess....

...and eco campsite owner
