Sacrificial crops

Post: # 104839Post MINESAPINT »

Planted some sprouts out about a month ago and as they need large spacings I sneaked some lettuce plants I had grown in modules in between each sprout plant. The slugs have murdered the sprouts but don't seem a bit interested in the lettuce. Cleanest crop of lettuce I have ever had. I will be growing more sacrificial sprouts in future!

Could do cos I did the same with some Unwins Mastergreen (Spring Cabbage), the cabbage have suffered and the lettuce are perfect. I often wonder if keeping a garden too weed free makes the slugs target new plant outs. After all if the soil is absolutely bare and we plant a row of tasty new cabbage then its hobsons choice for the slugs!
