Bargain-added after pic too!

Post: # 101404Post mrsflibble »

I got a lawn mower for £3 from a mid week boot sale yesterday.

Image

unfortunately it wasn't coping too well with the front jungle.

Image

the stupid plastic blades (safety mower... http://www.amazon.co.uk/s?ie=UTF8&searc ... ast&page=1) kept breaking. it's meant to be a hover mower, but it can't hover in 1.5 ft of coarse grass.

So, James put on his steel-toe cap work boots and de-safetied the mower.

Image

it will be removed once the jungle has been sorted!!!

look! you can even see my green waste bin there. it's nice and empty now.

the addition of that blade does mean only James can cut the lawn 'cos I wouldn't want to try it without toe-cap boots on!!! my feet are only an adult size 3 (euro size 36) and I don't think toecap boots go that small!

I've added the after pic, and also forgot to mention I'm going to hae to use a scythe or shears for the edges 'cos the lawn sort of blew up our strimmer.

well, not sort of. it was smoking and there were little flames coming out of the air-intake for the motor so I'm sure it's screwed.
James came running through the house and stuck it in soph's paddling box (she wasn't in it) to put the flames out.

mower's still good though!!!

I'm gobsmacked. I would have thought that the motor would have given up the ghost in there. And I would (had I thought of carpet doorstrips in the first place) have told myslef that aluminium was too soft. Just shows what overthinking a problem can do for you. Congrats on ingenuity.

my hubby thankfully comes from a long line of make-do and mend, cheap-*ss bodgers lol!

I love it. I'm so proud of him. he'd much rather bodge something or try and fix stuff than buy a new one; it's one of the things I most respect about him.

Like the bodge job - well done - and why not - we are very into make do and bodge it if you have to here.

In terms of steel toe caps - I am a size 36 / UK 3 - and I buy mine from any equestrian outlet where I can get the best price - usually about £15 to £17 as they are a kiddies size - so they are out there.

I have also bought army cadet boots at military outlets in size 3, with steel toe caps and a steel arch support - excellent for digging and giving that spade an extra shove through the gorund.

And sometimes you can find them in hardware supply stores but they are usually in a really dusty broken box on the floor hidden away or tucked away on a high shelf.
