I thought Spring was here ......

Post: # 98250Post Teasal »

we have had a couple of nice, warm days, so I got out in the garden to do some weeding. Got up this morning and back to the rain. Although its come sunny now.

I was going to plant some of my veg plants out, but looking at the forecast over the next few days, I noticed for our area it mentioned a ground frost!! There again, its probably as cold on the window ledges my plants are on, as it is outside, as we have no central heating in this old farmhouse!!

My windowledges are full of trays and pots, it would be nice to get them planted out, but with the frost warning, I may hold off a bit longer.

Oh, to live in a warmer part of the country!!!

What, and miss out on that scenery? I really miss the Derbyshire hills.

I'm with you MKG, I live in flat boring fenland. Nothing to see but buildings and dual carriageways, and even your dual carriageways are better looking!

Whats more all my windowsills are groaning with plants too- East Anglia is supposed to be mild but it was about 3C last night which is still too cold to put plants out.

The really frustrating thing is I like to try and keep the heating down, so even inside some plants are struggling to germinate. So much for being green

I'm in London - not TOO far but warmer than where you are... I think it may be a bit early unless you have a greenhouse. Give it two more weeks - it'll be hard but it'll be worth it!

Tried a heated propagator? They use very little, and give the heat just where you need it. Don't know how I ever got anything to germinate without one before... My house is freezing at the best of times!

Ina I must confess someone gave me one for Christmas, and I didn't want to be wastful and plug it in, then decided it was necessary for the like of basil, celeriac & marrow.

I hadn't read the instructions and assumed it regulated it's own temperature
I went back to it next day to find it was 36C

Still the celeriac survived!

I ended up building myself a sort of plant hut out of some trellis, garden canes and clear plastic bags.

My propagator seems quite cool to the touch but just gives a bit of gentle heat.

I sowed some french marigolds yesterday (hate the things but read that they help keep away carrot root fly) and put in the propagator - seed packet said to keep at about 20C which I can't do at night in the cold frame.

They have germinated overnight!
