Hello, All

Post: # 95753Post Bluemoon »

Hello All.

Wow. I didn't think sites like this existed! My hubby and I have been attempting to be self-sufficient now for about four years. I'd been growing at least some of my own veg since childhood as both my grandfathers were keen, then as an adult I'd grown my own to help supplement the family budget. Later we got an allotment, but had to give it up after about five years as by that time we were both in stressful jobs. About four years ago we were chatting after a rather indifferent evening meal and realized just how miserable we were. So we took on two lotties, I gave up the job and my hubby moved to a less stressful job nearer to home, we moved into a small terraced house and we've never been happier. We'd gone the whole hog; no telly, no computer, trying to make as little impact on the environment as possible. Then our son returned home after his course had ended, bringing with him all the trappings of the 21st century. I had a quick go on the 'puter and now I'm afraid I'm hooked. We now have two more allotments, the larger two for the fruit and veg, the medium sized one for the hens and a really tiny one for the herbs - I'm making an effort to learn how to spin, though I'm afraid it's not something that's coming naturally to me :( and I'd like to dye the wool with natural dyes, so a rather large section of the herb garden has been allocated for that.

We live about two miles from the centre of a large, industrial city so there are many things which are not possible for us as far as self-sufficiency is concerned, but we will soon be in a position where my hubby can reduce his working hours so we are obviously slowly getting there - and once he has more time then there will be much more that becomes possible. I've had a quick glance around the site and it's already been helpful, so I'm really looking forward to being a member here.

Hi Bluemoon and Welcome.

Sounds like you were brought up like me. My Dad was a keen gardener and his Dad was a dairy farmer who also grew a big garden.

My partner and I do the same.

We have a donkey, a small horse, 10 Rhode Island hens with an Ameracauna Rooster and 6 Silver duckwing Bantams with their own rooster, got 14 eggs today!

Yesterday we hauled used lumber for our woodshed and we'll be getting more.

We're planning to get goats and pigs in future and build a smokehouse as I was taught to smoke meat when I was growing up.

We want to get a juicer and a dehydrator yet and then we shall be well on our way to more self-suffiency.

We've got a 660 sq.ft house so storage becomes an issue at times.

I also do crafts and am slowly writing a novel, plus I am boatsitting an out of work fishboat.

We keep busy, lots of recycling going on here and we plan to paint the inside of the house and re-insulate this year.

I wish you luck with your endeavours.

Take Care
 Lois

welcome :flower:

we have just started to dabble in spinning wool, have been dyeing using synthetic dyes. saving onion skins for a while.. but my plans for dyeing with woad could be held back as most of my woad seedlings were eaten by slugs  !
