Am I a bad person?

On Saturday I took a trip into London. We went to see a friend in Islington and had a very nice time. While we were mooching about Islington I felt like I used to do when I lived in North London; as if I was at the centre of the world, though Islington was no where near as cool as when I was there.

Almost everyone was dressed in a terribly trendy way, there were fashions I'd not seen before, everyone I met had an accent from a different part of the world and there were so many people everywhere, moving about so fast. The cafes were buzzing, there were more exciting places to eat then I've seen in ages and everything felt so exciting and 'now'.

I realised how much I missed this life style. While I'm very grateful for the quieter, more moderate, more responsible, more season aware and more nature based lifestyle I have now, I suddenly felt like I'd lost something.

So, am I a bad person for feeling even the slightest attachment to such an unsustainable and impersonal style of city living? All comments are welcome and I won't be offended.

No, not in the least! I feel like that sometimes on the rare occasions I go to a town and look at clothes shops etc. Much more so in England than here though.

if it was a big part of yor life then of course you will feel an attachment to it.

After I had finished college, I went home for the summer before post grad. I felt like I had not been away, to the extent of "forgetting" about my boyfriend and linking up with old "friends". It just felt so comfortable and normal.

I did split with the boyf when I returned as I knew we weren't meant to be, but sometimes you need a reminder of either the old times, or a holiday from the new.
People are complex beasts. you are not a bad person (well I've never met you, but you don't seem to be! )

I feel like that too, but then the tube, overcrowding and the black sneezes for a day afterward put me off again.

It's nice to get a city fix every once in a while.
I feel like that on the very rare occasions that I go into Christchurch city here in NZ.
Last time we visited London I absolutely loved it too!

I don't feel that way I worked in a 'high fasion' high street store for years, before that I worked in 'entertainment' for a years... I don't want to go into detail, suffice to say I don't miss the life at all.

I had to always be 'on' and fasionable I hated it, I mean it was nice if you were having a good day, but sometimes I really didn't want to bother. I also had to shmooze and mingle with a bunch of people I really didn't like... or they were so 2 faced they'd forget your name, even though they had known you for years.

That is what the city means to me now, I am so glad to be away from it

Everyone needs a treat occasionally!

For example, its my birthday at the weekend, so i'm going to spend the night in London. I'm travelling there by train, and then coming back probably by coach, and i'm going to drink and party! I love going to London for the night, and i'm also toying with the idea of working there for a year, just to experience it. While i'm there, i'll miss the greenery around me and the quiet, but i think i'll be enriched by my experiences.

But...i'm only thinking about it at the moment.

If not London, then Cardiff is my next destination!!

So...you're not a bad person for liking the city. It has that effect on a lot of people. I think that the old adage that a small amount of bad stuff is good for you (although maybe not the morning after...)

I wouldn't call people who decide to live a different lifestyle "bad". Why is someone who chooses to live in the city, to dress by the latest fashion etc. regarded as bad.

Stupid example: We started a group to promote better craft brewed boutique beers in New Zealand. One thing we said from the start: If you tell people that mass produced beer is bad you are not getting anywhere! It is different but not bad.

Do you get my point?

Bad would be if you would love to go to the city sometimes and wouldn't do it only beacuse you think that it is "bad".

I worked in 'entertainment' for a years...

I choked on my cup of tea there!

I too sometimes think am I missing something when in Edinburgh, but it only last for 5 minutes and then I want to go back home again!

Mrs. Fibble, I think you're right about the grass. If I went back to that now I'd soon be exhausted and I'd miss what I have now and I certianly don't miss the black boggies. Sometimes I get fed up of people thinking I'm odd though so thank you for your kind comment .

It's not very Quakerish, peace testemony and all that, but sometimes I think Klingons are soooooo great.

You can get black bogies cleaning out a dirt floor chicken shed and doing stuff with wood ash! (just in case you did miss having them on occasions).
