Freecycle... too many lovely things...

Post: # 85472Post Annpan »

Soo... I don't think I am suppose to talk about this too much but I look on it as advertising for all Frecycle groups, worldwide...

My group (I am the owner / mod... ie.I set it up and do the Admin) It is 2 weeks old and only has 20 members but get this... the current offers include...

A huge greenhouse (I am having a look at it over the weekend)
A treadle sewing machine in full working order (I doubt I can convince John of both a greenhouse and a sewing machine)
A magimix icecream maker...

Seriously this is too much... I have to wait a certain amount of time before I 'bagsy' things... but it is making me sick... I have sweaty palms thinking about it...

ROFL....our Freecycle is ace, too. I can't believe some of the things people don't want. I got some gorgeous clothes for Ellis recently.
I have to be good, though. OH is still in a paddy about having a house full of picture frames I simply couldn't resist.....

Honestly Red, the dirty look I get from him... it's like I have just asked if I can keep a goat in the livingroom.

CitizenTwiglet, are you in the Glasgow Group? It got too crowded for me, I ended up leaving because it took me half an hour a day to read all the posts, only to find out that they were in Milngavie

No, he just thinks that everything I want is crap...
- trying to convince him that building a greenhouse out of pop bottles
- window display fake fire... I eventually passed it too my sister
- window display, flat pack, perspex boxes, which, after kicking around our flat for 4 years, are now cold frames

Apparently
I'll never use it, I don't need it, We don't have space for it, I already have a sewing machine, It'll be a nightmare to pick up, we're too busy...

Yeah but... but... but.. but..

Ann, yep I'm in the Glasgow group and it is really busy....I couldn't get online for three days (thanks, Tiscali!!) and I returned to 200 odd messages....
Maybe you could PM me a link to yours, if that would be OK?

I go to two groups, and one seems to have A LOT of wants, and the other one is fairly evenly spread out. It can throw up som euseful things and we have got rid of a few things through it (although we seem to have got more than ridded).
I get annoyed with lack of communication tho - I had two people interested in a knitting machine, then no word from either, I tested my email to check it was ok, but it is just their ignorance rather than my technology!
So, if anyone wants a very old knitting machine, and is near Carlisle, and it may not work coz I know nothing about them...it's yours!

Well i've signed up for the Glasgow, East Lothian, Berwickshire, and Edinburgh groups.

And i've got enough clothes for the up and coming twins (2 week to go) for the first 2 years of their lives, 2 cots, 2 high chairs, our bed, the big lad's bed, the twin push pram, 3 wardrobes for the kids clothes.

All courtesy of Freecycle!!

I think we have the 'cola and crisps for babies' group hereabouts (that must be 'something-IST' but I don't care today I'm fed up)
- always bags of clothes offered, always televisions and dvd players wanted

baggsy that sewing machine - you know it needs a good home

my most local one si good in that there's only two mailouts a day, rather than each post being an individul email... but in this way if you're not online at 8:30am when the early mailout is sent you don't necessarily get the good stuff- there's no limit on how early poeple can give away after an offer is made. stuff like breadmakers and electronics go really quick.
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very

My local group tends to be very busy. One thing I have done to help stay on top of it is to automatically delete all "WANTED" posts - I found that most were asking for things like laptops and, anyway, if I have something ready to offer, I'll offer it in my own good time. I suspect that a lot of other people also ignore them - certainly the few things I have wanted, which fitted exactly to the description of someone elses rubbish (eg. empty 2l drinks bottles) didn't get any replies.

I think it would be much more manageable if there were scheduled posts but, meanwhile, content myself with the fact that for all the neat things I've missed, I have still sometimes received some great things (in the past week I've had some "white sage" incense sticks and several classical CDs).

You can change your settings on the Yahoo groups page, change them to 'Daily Digest' which means you just get 1 email, with up to 25 messages on it, that makes it easier to scan through

I plan on not allowing Wanted posts for laptops... there is a Freecycle -wide rule that says don't ask for things like ... Wanted - diamond ring... well wouldn't we all like a diamond ring  '

MrsF... apart from the 'fair offer' rule (optional, wait 24h before choosing who your item will go to) there is no reason that anyone shouldn't give to the first person... For anyone who has got rid of things via freecycle you will know that sometimes, you are just sooo happy that anyone will take it off your hands and asap. And the main purpose of Freecycle is just to keep things out of landfill (that is the Mods guide to allow weird stuff to be posted - ie, pets, food, personal ads, and children (sometimes they are really quite funny)

Anyway I am sure I have said too much... first rule of freecycle, don't talk about freecycle

If you have problems with your freecycle group send a kindly email to the owner or mod of the group... they ought to help, and check out the main freecycle.org page for general rules and help...

I have to go now... these walls have ears
