How long can you go without logging on?

Post: # 84997Post Andy Hamilton »

After a few weeks without internet due to Tiscalli being awful (switched to Virgin). I feel somewhat philosophical about the whole experience. Despite being frustrating not being able to do anything to the site there was a part of me that enjoyed not checking my emails and not turning my computer on. Although it did niggle and I also realised how many times the radio and TV mention websites (as this wound me up).

It is good to back online again and the whole experience made me think about how much we have started to rely on the internet. So how long could you/ do you go without the internet? Has it become an integral part of your life?

I rely on t'internet much more than I do on other media.

I don't have a TV but I do listen to radio (either 2 or 4) all day, but just as entertainment/talking point really... I don't really trust the way news is reported.

I found a lo-o-o-ng time ago that the BBC do not give a pure and unbiased view of the world in news and discussion programmes.

I couldn't live long without 'ish' - It is the only place where I can chat with people who have similar interests. Plus I don't get mocked for asking a 'silly' question.

I like to hear the views of folk on here, alot of whom are very intelligent indeed  (not everyone though :geek:  )

I have to turn on my computer every day or I'd get withdrawal symptoms! The only time I've been away from my computer is when I've been away in England and that has been sheer hell!

As I rely on it for work, making telephone calls and listening to the radio (there's only so much Italian euro-pop that I stand) the internet is rarely off. Like most people, there's no doubt that the internet provides me with many unnecessary distractions (I should be finishing off a couple of articles right now instead of hanging out on ss-ish). Ho hum!

I rely on it for my work. Its very very useful for home ed resources
Also - if I have given my email address to friends and family living far away, then disappear, they would worry.
and frankly I enjoy surfing, and dont see a huge gain in not logging on.

I currently rely on it for all my work and most of my social life, so I'd be a bit stuffed without it. I'd also have to plan my life around the R4 schedule instead of using Listen Again, which would probably damage my work and social life even further....

That said, we didn't have the internet for months when we first moved, and I managed fine, checking email at the library a few times a week. I feel like I rely on it so much for maps, finding phone numbers, train times etc, but it's possible (just more work!!) to find information elsewhere. I also think I'd find it a bit lonely in the house now I'm at home all day and the bf is working. The internet helps me feel connected to the rest of the world!

I do sometimes need a weekend off... Or even a week, when I'm on holiday. Makes me appreciate it more when I get back on!

Hey, Andy, btw - SSish was mentioned in the Ecologist again!

I have to go on the internet every day, at least once!!

I'm at home with my daughter :binky: , and it is my lifeline to the world. It provides most of the information I need, recipes and it's my social life too, it's my connection to like minded people. :flower:

i find that even though i spend quite alot of time on the net, that it saves me time in the long run, for getting prices of materials , and getting better deals, contacting people regularly that before i would only see every couple of yrs, its great for research, and i to dont have a tv anymore, i only used to watch the news and the odd documentary so i can do that on te net, :cooldude:

well...i describe myself as a tinternet addict, BUT, when i was ill, i didn't log on for 4 days, and its been quite sporadic ever since.

There is something quite relaxing about not checking emails all the time, but at the same time, there's something frustrating about not coming onto forums!!

I've definitely cut my tinternet usage a lot lately, i found other things, like knitting and reading, and crafts. But again, without tinternet, i have no social life!!

It been a right pain in the backside at work not being allowed to log on to check here or emails, Hopefully, that should all become a lot easier in a while, when the rules are forgotten again!!

No idea - but I'm sure it's the second time I've seen it mentioned. Just along the lines of "for further information..." - but it all helps!

It is actually quite refreshing to have a break once in a while but generally I'm online a lot. I am sure I could survive quite happily without it if I had to but, while it is an option, I am glad to make use of it.
