In January of this year, Brighton & Hove council delivered a bombshell out of the blue and declared that an abandoned farm, plus adjacent statutory allotments 'Horsdean Allotments', and six family homes, were earmarked for a Park & Ride development.
Horsdean allotment site is the jewel in the crown of Brighton & Hove sites. Every plot is cultivated, and there is a waiting list of 40+....approx 2 - 3 years.
It is a vibrant and popular site that provides interaction between those of varied backgrounds and many generations, based on a shared interest of fresh food and healthy eating. Here there are families that have created gardens here to relax in, and growers of all kinds, including many organic gardeners.
Despite the council repeatedly referring to the area as 'the brownfield site of Patcham Court Farm', half the proposed site is in fact greenfield. The area is adjacent to both a conservation area and the proposed National Park.
The community contest that this area, so close to housing, within the Sussex Downs AONB, and adjacent to both a conservation area and the proposed national park, is an appropriate place for a car park, and therefore and are therefore organising an open day to raise awareness of allotment gardening, promote healthy eating, and to gather support against destruction of the area in favour of a park & ride scheme.
OPEN DAY:
There will be something for everyone of all ages, including tours of the grounds, 'experts' to talk to, refreshments, organised childrens activities, and lots of stalls:
