Avatars

Post: # 3126Post Muddypause »

I've been toying with the idea of uploading an avatar lately, but I see the current size limit is 1KB. Try as I might I can't fit all my devilish good looks into something that small.

Is this a necessary saving in web space, or is it to stop the horrors of people like me appearing? Can we be allowed a little more?

Hi Andy,

Am I missing something? My profile still limits me to 1kb. ISTR that it was around 7 or 8 a couple of weeks ago.

Right I have upped it a bit more and it should now be 13kb. The admin panel has the number in bytes and when I looked up what 13kb is it says 1664 bytes. So that is what it is set at. Not a side of computers I know much about I am afraid, so let me know what bytes it should be set at if this is wrong.

I tried to squish my avvy down to 1mb or what ever and I disappeared into a blur. I'll have another go!

Right, I have squished it down to under 2kbs. You can just about see what I look like. BUT...instead of the profile thingy accepting it, it now just says that the file must be a jpg (which it is, or a png, or gif) What am I doing wrong?

I always get KB and kb mixed up. I thought there were 8 bs to a B - 8 bits to a Byte. Or is it the other way around? Or maybe neither?

Anyway, my profile now says I am allowed 2KB, which still isn't enough to upload my little thing which claims to be 7.05KB (7226 bytes). To give some idea of comparison, it is the same size as the 'Tom Good' image which claims to be 7.06KB (7233 bytes).

Like shiney, I've tried compressing it but it just becomes a mess if I do.

Right, that's got it.

Once I past the 100 posts mark, I knew I'd have trouble feeling comfortable with Barbara's coquettish good looks - Tom's old woolley jumper and quizzical expression are much more in keeping with me.

Hence the avatar.

Hi shiney,

I've just had this problem, too. I eventually got round it by uploading the avatar to my webspace, and then using the 'Upload Avatar from a URL' option. No idea what the problem is, but it wasn't accepting it as a direct upload for some reason.

Shiney - I thought you were a bloke at first until you mentioned hubby! That's the problem with nicknames that could be of either sex!
