101 unsung heros and why

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

Why? Because they all pushed the boundaries to make things better for others. Some may have been flawed, but they all made and continue to make a difference.

Well, I suppose an unsung hero must, by its nature, be someone you will never have heard of.

So I nominate my friend Heather, who for as long as I have known her (20 years), organises several charity jumble sales a year on behalf of Oxfam. She's now well into her 70s, and has had several personal setbacks, but continues to hold them on the local pedestrian precinct, from 8:00am till 4:00pm, having collected, sorted, packed everything herself, she mans the stall in all weathers, and without complaint.

But if you want someone you've all heard of, surely the obvious one is John Seymour.

42. My Gran. Well, actually, shes nearly 85.

She was trained to be a killer of the enemy! This was during the war as part of the Home Front. She only told us this year about it...as it was a secret. She also had a part in building a famous bridge, who's name I can never remember. It was to help free the French from the Nazi invasion.

She says she will still use her 'skills' if anyone breaks into her house!
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

Or someone you've heard of, but didn't realise there was more to them than you realised.

Take Theodore Roosevelt, most people will know him vaguely as a US President, but how many know that he was the president responsible for preserving the Grand Canyon and creating many of the big US national parks; who pursued a balanced approach to preservation and development (definitely a one-off for US presidents!) and promoted recreation is a viable and valuable use of wilderness while also being a way of conserving it.

He was probably the first national leader to state that natural resources were a public trust that had to be conserved and preserved for future generations.

Anyway, have to dash as it's story time for the boys.

The ladies and gentlemen of the Australian Quaranteen Service.

They struggle to protect the Aussie environment against imported pests, quite often abused for their trouble!
