booze and beans

Was watching some gardening program early and they showed an ingenious way of growing peas, beans ect. Get your old glass bottles (wine) and sink them slightly into the ground next to each other in a circle shape. Now put some canes into the bottles and tie them up at the top like a wigwam (making sense so far?)

Right now plant your beans or peas on the inside of the circle and let them grow up the poles as normal. The bottles give heat to the plants, and they are not liked by slugs either.

What colour glass?

It sounds like a great idea - with the benefits of recycling of materials and preventing the base of your cane's from rotting as well. I wonder if there's any danger of it getting too hot between the bottles, if the glass magnifies the heat?

Hello Wulf, welcome to the forum.

On the program they were using green glass, I would have thought that green glass does not magnify the heat too much. I wonder if it gets too hot in very high temperatures, that is a fair point.

I've got some bottles in my recycling boxes and various plants that are going to need planting out with stakes for support before too long, so I think I might give the technique a go!
