I've not been here long (only found this site a couple of days ago) so I'm having a good root around and hopefully will get to know you all soon.
Me, I'm married and have 2 boys and I work in IT in Manchester. I have been growing veg in the back garden for a couple of years but this year (well, 3 weeks ago) I have gotten my hands on an allotment which I share with my nextdoor neighbour. It was disused, totally overrun with weeds and didn't even have a gate but we have got the worst of it chopped and I have managed to fit some posts and a gate this week.
I am in the process of smothering the ground using a method I read somewhere whereby you lay down cardboard then cover with a good mulching of manure. It should be good to turn over early spring so we'll see.
Anyway I'm rambling on
See y'all soon,
Matt.

the weeds on a new allotment (new to me, that is) last year. I followed local custom and practice and nicked carpets off skips and laid them over the weeds. I was going to burn the enormous piles of privet on the bare earth to deal with the roots and contribute wood ash to the soil, which would have worked a treat, if only the mice hadn't nested underneath the carpets. I spent much of the rest of the year, having discovered this, carefully walking round the edges, so as not to crush them.
