Georgia Candy Roaster

Post: # 285707Post Odsox »

Has anybody in the British Isles grown it ?
I grew some this year and it grew well, unlike the butternuts which failed totally and the potimarrons/utchikiri which only grew tiny fruits.
I was expecting them to be overly sweet with "candy" in it's name, but mine are not sweet at all, and I wondered if that was down to the lack of sunshine this summer.

Goodness knows why I bought the seed in the first place as now that I've given up sugar, lots of things are far too sweet for me, like butternuts and the modern sweetcorn varieties. But this year at least it's rather nice, very similar to potimarrons but a lot easier to grow, and grows to a huge size like a prize winning marrow.

I think I shall grow them again, but as we are going to have a long hot summer next year*, I was wondering if they will be a disappointment.

*Starting early with positive vibes

Never heard of them - where did you get the seed? My previous attempts at growing butternut and potimarron were unsuccessful...

I got them from Nicky's Nursery Ina, http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/seeds/p ... htm#Squash
I'd recommend them as they are dead easy to grow, even this year with no sun or warmth.
As long as you're not expecting them to be sweet.

I might give them a go then, I have grown a small butternut squash this year, just the one, but I put it in really late from a friend who sowed them really late

Don't like sweet, but like dead easy - so they sound ideal!
