rack mead after one day??

Post: # 266481Post safronsue »

a quick morning mead question for someone....my first go at mead. yesterday there was lots of frothing, all up the shoulders of the demi john and filling up the neck. this morning the airlockis still blipping every one or two seconds but there is no frothing. the frothing has left crud on the neck and i'm wondering if this is bad and will cause mould. should i rack to get rid of this gunk?

Assuming everything was suitably clean before you started I wouldn't touch it until it's ready to rack. There's no air getting in so it should be fine.

A quick wipe clean should do the trick. Mead's temperamental - I wouldn't disturb it at all if it's actively fermenting (which it obviously is), as it's likely to stick its tongue out at you and stop dead. And, being temperamental, it's likely it'll take a week. Or a month. Or two of either.
