Poorly chook :(
Our best loved chicken was found slumped over in the run this morning. Her leg is floppy and swollen, and looks bruised. I don't think it's broken as she hasn't complained when it's been moved. The wing on the same side looks a bit floppy too. She doesn't appear stressed or distressed. Is it possible that she's had a stroke? We've brought her inside for some TLC and she seems quite happy. Any advice?

I haven't got anything to suggest but wanted to
, we've had sick chooks and it's horrible when you don't know what to do x

Re: Poorly chook :(
Is she an old hen? I've had two that have just lost the use of their legs when their time had come, although I hadn't noticed any swellings or bruising. We had to put them out of their misery because they weren't going to recover.
Is it possible the hen was attacked by anything? For the moment I would wait and see what happens and make sure there is food and water close by or take it to her to feed and drink if she can't move.

Re: Poorly chook :(
MMM We've had her 5 years and she was several years old when she came. We had an episode last year when she went off her legs, so we brought her inside and after a week or so she perked right up and was strutting into the kitchen demanding food and pecking my daughters toes! Right now she seems quite happy sitting in her nest in the kitchen, pecking at her corn - she's even been singing! I guess all we can do is keep her in here and watch her.

Indoors! I never thought about doing that with my hens - might try it next time. You are obviously a much better hen mother than I am.
I will cross my fingers for her and hope she recovers.

Re: Poorly chook :(
she could have had a stroke or something.
We had one once that her knocked herself out (we actually thought she was dead & was nearly disposing of her!) and took several days to slowly regain control of her neck, then wings, then legs, then feet and finally toes. It was pretty amazing to watch.
Sadly, she didn't live a long life afterwards, but the end was sudden & she appeared to have made a perfect recovery.
So I'm all for cage rest & a night or 3 indoors. Just be careful re-introducing her afterwards - hens have short memories & sharp beaks!

Re: Poorly chook :(
Thank you for the positive new LBD - I hope our Brehenda makes a similar recovery! She seems perky enough - she's been happily pecking away at her food and complained when she'd made a mess in her cage! Oh and as for re-inroducing her to the others - she is most definately the matriarch and even the pushiest ones don't mess with her - she soon puts them in their place!
That's her on my pic <--
