Tree roots

Just taming some more of my jungle garden and have come across a submerged tree root.... I've been digging and axing it for the last 5 days... any advice?

All I can seem to do is slowly and tediously hack bits off it.... but it will take weeks

I'm thinking explosives or smth.... ???
