Year round Tomatoes

Post: # 221008Post Odsox »

This year I think I will definitely manage it.
For those who don't know, I decided 3 years ago that I would try to have fresh picked tomatoes for 12 months of the year.

Year 1 I had some definite large gaps during the spring but managed to have summer ones ready by mid June see .. http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/ ... 12&t=14524
Year 2 (last year) I narrowed the gap to less than a month, no ripe tomatoes for about 3 weeks.... http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/ ... 12&t=18243

This year I have Gardeners Delight still fruiting in the conservatory, although they didn't particularly like the cold snap we had in December. But they survived without heating and bridged the gap between the greenhouse ones that died of frostbite in November and the next lot that have just started ripening. These ones and 5 more younger plants will almost certainly continue cropping for the next 9 months.
It took three years, but very interesting to do and I learnt quite a lot in the process, plus there is nothing quite like having a tomato sandwich in February with your own fresh fruit picked seconds before.

So impressed! Maybe I should go for it, but I would need artificial light I think... Very dark up here during winter...

Well done Tony, your perseverance paid off!

I would be interested in which varieties you grew and when - I presume you grow quicker cropping varieties in the darker days of winter? :dontknow:

And I am quite green with envy

The ones I've grown in 7" pots for the last two years are Totem which I've found to be very well behaved in that they don't go leggy and don't even lean towards the light when they are grown on a window sill, plus the flavour is very good.
Those 3 in the picture were sown on the 6th of September and I have 6 more to follow on sown the beginning of October & November.

Interestingly (for me) the ones that I grew last year .. those that ripened in March, are still producing fruit even though the plants look like little gnarled old oak trees, but they are nowhere near so prolific now. But I can't bring myself to throw them away when they still have flowers and fruit on them.

No special treatment at all, just ordinary compost and a weekly dose of tomato fertiliser when the first fruits appear.
Oh, and a south facing window sill.
